Buttons off center, ties at the waist, covers whatever you had on underneath. That is the entire decision.

Garment measurements

All measurements in inches, taken with the coat laid flat and measured across one side, so chest doubles for the full circumference. These are garment measurements, not body measurements. Allow up to 0.5 in variance between pieces.

The fabric

70% wool, 30% polyester, double faced and brushed. Double faced means the cloth is woven as two joined layers and finished on both sides, so there is no separate lining inside. That is why it hangs heavy and straight instead of clinging, and why it keeps a clean line at the shoulder after a full day of wear.

The cut

• Oversized through the body, dropped shoulder, wide straight sleeve
• Falls to mid calf
• High stand collar that buttons closed at the throat, or folds open
• Cut to layer over a knit or a blazer without pulling across the back

• Self tie belt, 78 in long and 2 in wide, with loops at the side seams

How it fits

Runs oversized on purpose. Take your normal size for the silhouette in the photos, size down for something closer to the body, size up if you plan to layer heavy knits under it all winter. Between sizes, size down: the belt takes in the waist, the shoulder cannot be taken in.

Because the coat is long, your height changes where it lands more than your size does. At 47 in from shoulder to hem in size M, it falls near the ankle under 5 ft 4 in, at mid calf between 5 ft 4 in and 5 ft 8 in, and just below the knee above 5 ft 8 in.

Care

• Dry clean recommended, and twice a season is plenty. Airing the coat overnight does most of what a clean would.
• Spot clean with a damp cloth and cold water. Blot, do not rub.
• Steam on low to release creases. Do not press an iron onto the wool face.
• Store on a wide wooden hanger, never a wire one.
• Run a fabric shaver over the friction points once a season, under the arms and where a bag strap sits. Every brushed wool blend pills there. It is not a fault and it takes two minutes.
• The coat arrives folded in a garment bag. Hang it for 24 hours and the fold lines drop out on their own.
